Chapter oneThe inherited world

The Still

A sea that is not a sea.

A flat pewter plane without wave, reflection, wake, or tide. A low fog lid that has occupied the same horizon since before anyone’s grandmother. Rivers and enclosed basins remain ordinary water; none of them joins one continent to another.

“There is only choosing which arm to cross—and how wide it is where you cross it.”

The world you inherit

Your shared history

Kaerys to the charts.
The Windlass to everyone who works.

Every player character spent part of their first four levels in the narrowest crossing’s divided port. You need not be born there. You need not have known one another. You did leave something unfinished.
